New Cannabis Flowering Research Alert!

This research conducted by Samuel R. Haiden, Nathan Johnson & Gerald A. Berkowitz validates and deepens what many growers already knew...light is the key factor in when cannabis decides to flower.

It’s NOT just about HOW LONG the light lasts, but also the QUALITY OF LIGHT that tells your plants when to start flowering.

What exactly did they study here???
They looked at HOW cannabis genes turn on/off during flowering, focusing on the plant’s
Critical Day Length (CDL) the exact daylight length that triggers flowering.

They also tested how the balance of Red to Far-Red light (R:FR ratio) affects this process.

All this was done in precise indoor growing setups.

What does this mean for #cultivators???

-Cannabis flowers when days get short enough, triggering specific genes.

-The ratio of red to far-red light changes how the plant “reads” day length.

-Tweaking light color and timing indoors can speed up or delay flowering.

This helps growers control harvest timing and maximize yields.

Breeders can use this info to develop strains that flower better under specific light setups.

We’re proud to announce the publication of The Science of Smokability Phase 1 results in @cannabissciencetechnology!

This is a groundbreaking, peer-reviewed study done in collaboration with @appliedpharmacognosy investigating how water activity impacts the chemical composition and #sensory experience of cannabis smoke.

For the first time, both consumer perception and chemical analysis have been combined to show how post-harvest decisions directly influence #terpene yield, #ash quality, #smoke irritation, and even financial returns for #cultivators.

Key finding:
Optimizing water activity between 0.55–0.65 aW can significantly improve flavor, aroma, and smoking experience, without sacrificing cannabinoid yield.

New Research on HLVd Decontamination in Cannabis Cultivation 🧪

Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd) is a $4 billion challenge in the cannabis industry, reducing biomass, flower quality, and overall yields.

Effective decontamination is essential to limiting its spread, yet the industry-standard disinfectants—10% bleach and 2% Virkon—can be harsh on plants, people, and equipment.

A new study by @vernebio systematically evaluated PRO-OXINE® Horticulture and found it achieved a 5-log (99.999%) reduction of HLVd in 10 minutes, matching the efficacy of a 20% bleach solution.

New Research Alert! How Drying & Curing Impact Hemp Quality

Postharvest drying and curing are critical for hemp quality, cannabinoid retention, and microbial safety—but what’s the best approach? 🤔

A recent study from Cornell University explored three drying methods (hot air, ambient air, and freeze drying) and compared curing in glass jars vs. Mylar bags to determine the most effective strategies for hemp processors.

🔬 Key Findings:
✅ Hot air drying (75°C) is the fastest & best for microbial control.
✅ Freeze drying preserves cannabinoids & color but takes longer.
✅ Curing increases moisture balance without degrading cannabinoids.
✅ Glass jars outperform Mylar bags for long-term storage.

This week, we’re diving into a groundbreaking study on the best temperature and light intensity combos for boosting medical cannabis yields and cannabinoid production.

Whether you’re a grower or a researcher, these insights are game-changing!

🔬 Key Findings:
✅ High temps (31°C/27°C) lowered cannabinoid yields, but terpenoids stayed stable.
✅ CBD-dominant strains lost 30% of dry matter at high temps, while THC-dominant strains showed resilience.
✅ Higher light intensity (up to 1200 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹) significantly boosted flower production.
✅ A 1% increase in Total Light Integral (TLI) led to 0.95% more flower mass for THC strains and 0.7% for CBD strains.

💡 What This Means for Growers:
🌡 25°C is the sweet spot for max cannabinoid yields.
💡 High light intensity (1200 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹) = bigger yields.
