How Much Magnesium Does Cannabis Need?

This week, @shak_bad dove into the study “How Much Magnesium Does Cannabis Require for Optimal Growth and Function” by Dalit Morad and Nirit Bernstein (Volcani Center & Hebrew University of Jerusalem).

🔬 Key Findings:

🌟 Optimal Mg Range: 35–70 mg L⁻¹ for healthy vegetative growth.
⚠️ Deficiency: 2–20 mg L⁻¹ caused deficiencies.
⚠️ Toxicity: 140 mg L⁻¹ led to plant stress.
🍃 Leaf Performance: Young leaves thrived with more Mg, while older leaves naturally aged.

💡 Why It Matters:
Balancing Mg is crucial for optimal plant health, photosynthesis, and growth during this vital phase.

💦🧠🥦Thirsty for Knowledge Thursday: Can Red and White Light Boost Growth and #Terpenes?

This week, Shak dives into a groundbreaking study exploring the role of red and white light in optimizing growth and secondary metabolite accumulation in cannabis. 🌞💡

🔬 Practical Breakdown:
In controlled environments, light spectrum is a game-changer for plant growth.

The study examined four #LED light spectrums with a focus on one unique LED source that emits dual red peaks at 640 nm and 660 nm—precisely aligned with chlorophyll’s peak absorption for #photosynthesis.

✨ Key Findings:

The dual red peak spectrum (combined with white light) delivered the highest flower yields and boosted terpenoid concentrations.

Light intensity and spectrum had no effect on cannabinoid levels—but bleached flowers from higher light exposure showed elevated #CBD levels.

Green light plays a crucial role in preventing photobleaching by redistributing light deeper into the canopy. 🌿

💡 What It Means for #Growers:

Use dual red spectrum lights (640 & 660 nm) to boost yields but manage intensity to avoid photobleaching.

Incorporating green light can reduce stress and ensure more uniform #canopy growth.

🚨Thirsty for Knowledge Thursday 🌱💡

This week, we’re spotlighting a groundbreaking study: “Harvesting Light: The Interrelation of Spectrum, Plant Density, Secondary Metabolites, and Cannabis sativa L. Yield.”

What’s the takeaway?
The study highlights how different red-to-far-red (R:FR) light ratios, plant density, and light distribution impact cannabis yields and secondary metabolite production.

🌟 Key Insights:
1️⃣ A lower R:FR ratio (AP67) boosted dry flower yields by 16%, especially in the last 10 days of flowering.

2️⃣ A higher R:FR ratio (Solray 385) enhanced terpene concentrations by 41%, driven primarily by increased monoterpene synthesis.

3️⃣ Photon conversion efficiency (PCE) was higher with the AP67 spectrum (0.06 g mol⁻¹ vs. 0.05 g mol⁻¹).

💡 For Cultivators:

Choose light sources not just for intensity but for spectral quality—lower R:FR boosts yields, while higher green light enhances terpenes. 🤯

Optimize other environmental factors, like CO₂, to maintain high photon conversion efficiency and avoid light stress.

Thirsty for Knowledge Thursday 💦🧠🌱💡

Today, we’re diving into how photoperiod manipulation can take cannabis cultivation to the next level. 🌞🌙

This study tested two Type 1 cannabis varieties under 12-hour and 13-hour light cycles, aiming to increase yield by boosting the daily light integral (DLI). Here’s the breakdown:
•
Lighting Setup: LED lights delivering 540 µmol/m²/s at the canopy.
•
DLIs:
•
12-hour photoperiod = 23.8 mol/m²/day
•
13-hour photoperiod = 25.7 mol/m²/day

The results?
A significant yield increase under the 13-hour photoperiod:
•
Variety IM: 1.35x yield boost
•
Variety GG: 1.5x yield boost

What’s fascinating is that the DLI only increased by 4–6%, yet the yield gains were far greater. Plus, cannabinoid concentrations remained comparable—or even improved!

We also learned that the extended photoperiod impacted plant development:
•
Variety IM experienced a 1.5-day delay in flowering onset under the 13-hour cycle, which slowed stigma maturation.
•
Both varieties developed larger, more robust plants with the extended light cycle.

Do you prioritize consumer preferences or focus on maximizing profits when you sell?

Our #ScienceofSmokability study found there was no significant difference in consumer preference between pre-rolls at 0.45 and 0.65 water activity (aW). The relationship between water activity and moisture content at a given temperature is called the moisture sorption isotherm.

From a previously created isotherm, we can correlate 0.45 and 0.65 water activity with a moisture content of 8% & 17%, respectively.

This difference equates to 9% weight loss, which means 9% less revenue per pound!

There was a slight increase in overall desirability at 0.45 aW as opposed to 0.65 aW, but it isn’t statistically significant—most people couldn’t tell the difference.
